Study details for schools
What the study involves
Kickoff workshop (1 hour, online or in person)
- Students set up the app on their own phones
- Led by the researchers
- Students sign in on each platform's own page, so their passwords go only to that platform
Every Sunday (10 minutes, on their own phone)
- Every Sunday they spend ten minutes on their own phone watching their week played back.
- The student sets goals and switches levers that only they can reach. The app describes what happened and never tells them what to do.
- No weekly work for teachers
Closing session (1 hour)
- A results session, led by the researchers
Privacy and safeguarding
Titles, creators, searches and messages stay on their phone, encrypted.
One encrypted summary goes to the researchers each week.
It holds minutes, topics and times of day, and nothing is sent before twenty students join.
The Max Planck Institute keeps it pseudonymised, and any student can withdraw at any time.
The school gets anonymised findings about the class as a whole.
In the app, a student who needs help sees who they can talk to
Students wipe their data from the phone with one tap. Pseudonymised study data stays with the institute and is deleted on request.
Ethics approval for the Oxford pilot (Reference: 1990161). Approval for this study is pending and no cohort starts before it is granted.
The tool describes and does not evaluate. Students are never told their behaviour is good or bad.
Parental consent process
Parents consent, students assent, and either can withdraw at any time.
