Help your students see how algorithms see them
A free research study with the Max Planck Institute for Human Development. Students see what platforms have built about them, every week, and change it.
Register your school's interestHow the study works
- 01
Feeds decide what a student sees next.
Every scroll is a signal, and the signals add up to a picture of them.
- 02
The student never sees that picture.
It shapes what they watch tonight and what they like a year from now.
- 03
One look at it changed that.
In our 2025 pilot, 27 students saw their own viewing history laid out for the first time.
- 04
This study asks what changes when they look every week.
Every Sunday they spend ten minutes on their own phone watching their week played back.
- 05
And what changes when they can act on it.
The student sets goals and switches levers that only they can reach. The app describes what happened and never tells them what to do.

Pending
first cohorts, once approved
- Students use their own phones. Nothing runs on school systems.
- The Oxford pilot had ethics approval (ref. 1990161).
- Approval for this study is pending with the Max Planck Institute.
*We start at 14 because social media is legal at that age in most countries.
What leaves the phone
- 01
What they see is kept on their phone.
Titles, creators, searches and messages stay on their phone, encrypted.
- 02
One encrypted summary goes to the researchers each week.
It holds minutes, topics and times of day, and nothing is sent before twenty students join.
- 03
The institute holds it, not the school.
The Max Planck Institute keeps it pseudonymised, and any student can withdraw at any time.
- 04
Your school only ever sees the cohort.
The school gets anonymised findings about the class as a whole.
In the app, a student who needs help sees who they can talk to, and nobody passes a student's name to the school. This is an academic study, not school monitoring. Myranda, Inc. is registered with the ICO, the UK's data protection regulator.
What each side brings

The study asks for
- One class of about twenty, aged 14 to 18
- A 60-minute kickoff slot, online or in person
- A named safeguarding lead
